Small Poetics ~ Feature Fridays: Local Business Edition

My sister, Jane Kerrison, is the artist behind Small Poetics. Her love of writing is married with her love of creating art in these hand crafted pieces.

Poetry and tea combined into lovely little art. Ranging from small magnets and note cards, to larger 8×10 prints, Small Poetics brings the love of reading right onto your walls.

What Jane does is called Blackout Poetry, and the process begins with a book. She finds a page that speaks to her and blacks out everything except the words she wants to remain. What is left is an original poem. This poem is then mounted on watercolour paper that has been hand dyed, by Jane, with different kinds of tea. And she has discovered that different varieties of teas produce different hues on the paper.

With pages from Little Women, The Hobbit, 2001 A Space Oddesy, Secret Garden and more, Jane is able to draw even more meaning into the artwork by resonating with people who adored the original books.

Available through her shop on Etsy, or at local craft markets around Ottawa, she has both originals and reproductions for sale.

Jane asked me to photograph her process of making the images, as well as a headshot that spoke to her artistic side and product shots of the artwork itself.

Below is a sample of what we achieved together, and these images now grace her Etsy store as well as social media channels, and are used to apply to local craft markets.
